Amazon.com has launched Amazon Pharmacy, a new online store which is set to disrupt the market for purchasing prescription medications.
The move comes two years after Amazon purchased online pharmacy Pillpack for $753 million.
The new service will enable Amazon customers with a pharmacy profile to add insurance information, manage prescriptions, and choose payment options before checking out.
Prime members will have access to discounts of up to 80 per cent off generic and 40 per cent of brand name medications when paying without medical insurance.
Amazon Pharmacy customers will also have 24/7 access to pharmacists online if they have queries about medications.
“We designed Amazon Pharmacy to put customers first – bringing Amazon’s customer obsession to an industry that can be inconvenient and confusing,” said TJ Parker, vice president at Amazon Pharmacy and co-founder of Pillpack. “We work hard behind the scenes to handle complications seamlessly so anyone who needs a prescription can understand their options, place their order for the lowest available price, and have their medication delivered quickly.”
Doug Herrington, senior vice president of north American consumer at Amazon, said: “As more and more people look to complete everyday errands from home, pharmacy is an important and needed addition to the Amazon online store.
“PillPack has provided exceptional pharmacy service for individuals with chronic health conditions for over six years. Now, we’re expanding our pharmacy offering to Amazon.com which will help more customers save time, save money, simplify their lives, and feel healthier.”
